Lower hepcidin increases iron absorption. Hepcidin levels are lowest in the morning so take iron supplements then. Also, vitamin D has a direct impact on iron absorption (because it decreases hepcidin). Maybe take a look at some studies about hepcidin and vitamin D and how they affect ferritin levels.
