My appetite is also very high, with little weight gain. I was wondering if I might have too much orexin. Or maybe it’s an adenosine issue.
Thanks for the great article!

I have ADHD and Narcolepsy. 4 years ago I used Modafinil for 1.5 or 2 years. This medication has some side effects on me, after 3-4 days which I used regularly and I was fresh but suddenly my body collapsed for at least 24 hours. Actually, one or two days a week I was a dead body, I could not do anything, any physical or mental activity. And my adrenal and male hormones increased dramatically and I was treated with medication and it is still going on.
Now, I have two international exams which are so expensive and important for me, in the other hand, my narcolepsy and ADHD bored me, some days I am a dead body, I have no energy, no concentrate, and no motion. I kindly ask you if it is possible please help me, how I can recover my energy fast after using Ritalin?  Are there better medications for me? I appreciate your kindness and generosity.

Thank you very much
Sincerely

I’ve been researching but haven’t found much.

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy and cataplexy when I was around the age of 16. I am now 29 years of age and I try my hardest to make an honest living but it is difficult to keep jobs when I am sometimes not able to bring myself to get out of bed. My main concern is my health. My body keeps getting used to the medicine I take for narcolepsy and usually have to change medications every few years, and up the dosage after a year of the new med. I am currently taking 70mg of Vyvanse twice daily. I have chest pains almost everyday, intense migraines, and my hands shake uncontrollably, like I have parkinsons. I would just like to help out in any way possible for my livelihood and future patients with the same diagnosis.

Every year when ragweed and mountain cedar are in the air I experience extreme depression and fatigue where I can’t function. Its like I become jelly and can’t do anything but lay there. Cognitive function is gone. Its very debilitating for me and my family’s life. I’ve gone to doctors, allergist over the years and nobody can diagnose. It seems it may be a histamine/narcolepsy connection. Can you help me by looking at my genes? And would these orexin tips help me? thanks in advance!

But I never feel rested after sleep and feel like I’m thinking and having far too active dreams while I sleep. I’m generally healthy, skinny, in vg shape. Tried suvorexant, didn’t help…what could be causing my weird “insomnia” which is really just poor quality sleep?

Sleeps several periods through the day, with no inappropriate catalyst (has typical bedtime routine). Student and parent, as well as past school records indicate that this has been chronic. In past schools, she also has had bouts/spikes of significant aggression, is classified as Emotionally Disturbed. Where does one go for a proper diagnosis?

Nicotine and caffeine were my self medicating drugs of choice, nicotine being the primary addiction (smoking nearly 2 packs per day) while caffeine included multiple pots of coffee per day along side soda and caffeine pills, I eventually quit caffeine. I found caffeine to be helpful but also an antagonist to the neurotransmitter responsible for sleep paralysis and seemed to worsen overall narcolepsy symptoms. Smoking has moved to vaping now. I was one of the ones on modafanil in the early days as ritalin was causing bouts of insane rage (dysphoria). Modafanil was great, no anger, good mood but raging insatiable appetite. I would be fine then I’d be so hungry I couldn’t seem to get enough food. I found just about any alcoholic beverage would interrupt the hunger signal, the combo didn’t seem to harm me although no research about the interaction with alcohol had been performed at that time, it did eventually turn into multiple drinks which had an adverse effect on blood pressure. During this time I had developed type II diabetes and gained quite a bit of weight with dangerously high BP, so i went off all meds and while I had symptoms of narcolepsy, they weren’t nearly as severe. I’ve lost all the weight and started regular dosing at 250mg per day nicotinamide riboside with occasionally dosing l-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (gastrointestinal issues will occur with regular usage of AKG). The NR shows positive effects on the diabetes (which I personally think may have been responsible for the reduction of symptoms through its immune suppressing factors {diabetes not NR}). I take Nuvigil now, I still experience rapid onset of hunger, but not in the manner I once did, it’s sudden but not insatiable. Getting to the point, I have found that some of the effects of Provigil or Nuvigil in combination with other substances that cannot be openly mentioned here can effectively permanently alter the remaining orexin producing cells, the effects are not as great as actually taking the meds, but I do and have stopped meds for weeks or months at a time with no major issues other than occasionally spacing out for short periods. It is by no means a ‘cure’ , it will not replace the lost cells, but does have positive effects that seem to last. I’m not sure exactly how it works, but I theorize that it created more synapses and therefore more receptors in the responsible neurons. I only write this in the event a researcher might want the info, it is much too risky for anyone to follow what I did without actual clinical research. Having interacted with a number of other narcoleptics, I have found many respond very differently to meds and other stimulus, so it may not work or could make things worse. I will only respond with detailed info to those who have a dot edu address.

Is this net carbs or total carbs?

Do people tell you you snore? Apnea causes all those symptoms due to the loss of regular sleep (you still sleep but its more like blacking out) and the oxygen deprevation. A quic k pretest that may work is to look up but relax your throat if it becomes hard to breathe through your nose via your throat that’s a pretty good sign

You say CO2 is beneficial to increasing orexin (therefore wakefulness) What then is happening in a roomful of people with insufficient ventilation? CO2 has increased and people get sleepy. Or is it more that O2 has decreased?

What’s strange is I started feeling a decreased sense of wakefulness (with head tightness/sensitivity to light) after I went through some pretty rough times. Everything sort of went blurry/foggy afterwords.

So, I actually NEED GABA promoters to cool me down. My system became so sensitive that I literally was forced to quit smoking, coffee, sugar, even fruit.

BUT.. yet I don’t feel the alertness or clarity that I once had.

Since this the only thing I’ve been able to find is low B12. (I get shot)

Is there a way to “balance” this?

Any recommendations/insight? Thanks.

I think Im good with LG now but seem to still have issues with N. I just woke up after 4 hours sleep, feel rested after a few hours in the sea, chicken dinner and 1 litre of beer.

So I think Oxycontin, mental stimulation and trytophan can help. Oh, I also started the 7 or 10 day mental cleanse diet and listened to delta wave bi-naural beats for a while before sleep.

As another person posted sleep hygiene and routine seems to be important, if I let myself sleep I cam wake up after 7 or 9 hours, but 9 leads to excessive REM.

I feel fine now after 4 hours, has anyome tried reducing sleep hours or polyphasic sleep?
