At this point now I have one question that remained open (or more, but this is the first one), and as I am not a physician, I need further clarification on this: at the end of the article you mention that GABA supplements do not have any modifying effect on the brain GABA levels because they cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. It’s clear so far. But, is it a good news or bad news for supplement takers? In other words, does it mean that GABA supplements can be a safe way to increase GABA in the body because it does not alter the the brain’s function, or does it mean that GABA supplements do not have the desired and claimed effect at all?
I know it sounds a “laymen” question, but I am not a professional, just an enthusiast beginner researcher of the subject, mainly because I do researches about high sensitivity and about how people having HSP can cope with increased level of anxiety and menthal burnout (due to overstimulated nerve system).
Thank you very much in advance for your kind reply!

Regarding GABA’s ability to cross the BBB:
1. For those with a leaky BBB (such as myself), exogenous GABA will readily cross, even at low dosages. PharmaGABA (fermented using Lactobacillus Hilgardii) is my molecule of choice.
2. Crossing the BBB is not the only modality via which exogenous GABA can modulate signaling. Several gut bacteria produce and/or interact with GABA. As such, it is thought the enteric system via the gut-brain axis can potentiate GABA-ergic pathways post-supplementation.

I’ve tried many of these individually or combined, in tinctures in an effort to decrease motor tics and excessive blinking. After years of research and failed attempts, I learned this is an over activity of the brain and very much related to GABA depletion just the same as in Tourette’s syndrome.
It is difficult to find a concise list like this along with individual experiences such as yours. Thank you for this!

I’d never heard of magnolia being used for GABA fascinating and the article explains the mechanisms each remedy has on the receptors. Brilliant!

B6 (Pyroxidine HCL) as pyridine-5’-phosphate, the active form has enzymes called PLP that are the one thing to get active GABA bound, causing Cl- depolarization, Impulses from neurological cells are “inhibited.” Binding sites are not remotely similar, ligand’s subunits are homogenous to the compound, the affinity has little to do with effect, intrinsic aptitude is the strength of GABA actually binds with a pore, which opioids do not negatively mod binding, carbamates are known to potentiate both. Ashwagandha hasn’t been even projected to modulate GABA, stress-reliever adaptogens and saying it’s like diazepam… no anticonvulsant/muscle relaxtion/sleepiness/cross-tolerance. Valproate/Valproic Acid is an Rx. Lactones from Kava… D1/2 agonist/CB1 agonist/acute onset hepatoxicity/mu & Delta opioid positive modulation… GABAb aka peripheral BBB GABA tolerance isn’t like a agonist to subunits it’s a2b, NMDA/NfKappa/BCL-2 and dopamine axonal spiny neurons, Alcohol is a cAMP and GABAr agonist like proforol & neuronsteriods. Magnolol & Honokiol with the 4-C CBD2 agonist. You need lipid and nitrogenous versions, theyre not hyrodophilic. Best one on here. GABAa PAM’s are not Kava everyday friendly liver and calm with good CBD:THC tinc. lemon balm and valerian root are good together. Taurine doesn’t bind to GABA… whoo, it’s a glutamate excitatory inhibitor. Helps gaba I guess. it’s essential taurine is the goods. Thanks for showing people how the compounds are personally what they wanna see/have. PLEASE research all these NIH.com/ PubChem are great. I’m an obsessive biochemistry phamacokinetic, if I know something about anything, all complex systems behavior internally and dynamically are wild and complex the kinetics of your body’s way to take things changes like food-likability for every other human.

Can’t ZINC actually be beneficial for GABA by helping to remove Copper??? My Dr actaully recommended it to possibly help with gluatamate toxicity, especially people who have a copper overload tendency. Thoughts?

I have been taking a GABA Calm in the evening and a 100mg Pharma GABA right b4 bed for about 3 months. This has great,y improved my sleep and mild anxiety. Just recently, I am feeling a tight pressure in the back of my head in the morning, which leaves me somewhat tired. My question is if there is a cumulative effect of GABA. When I stopped the Pharmacy Gaba, I was more alert in the morning, but after my regular 1/2 hr of exercise, I felt that pressure/tightness again.

If your son has Glutamate issues he should be be taking NAC and ALCAR. Ginkgo Biloba is also very useful.

I think it was patented by a European research company but
it is available in several different brands in the US (found it on
Amazon and a few vitamin companies). I use the Natural Factors
brand of it (cheapest that I found). I have been using it for a couple of months and it really helps sleep issues and my blood pressure and anxiety have dropped considerably also. I personally would recommend that you try it.

This is the main reason why people can get side effects if they take too much GABA at once.

Remember to remove the foods high in Glutamate (gluten in grains and casein in milk products). The key word in that article is BALANCE.

My son has OCD and we just received some lab results. It turns out that his GABA level is extremely low and the glutamate level very high! This article is so helpful to us, I can’t thank you enough : )

Serotonin increases the permeability of the blood brain barrier ( AKA the “BBB”) which causes other substances to flow more freely into the CNS.

If there is a gene error in GAD enzyme then GABA may not be effectively synthesized from GA.
