But do the collagen used in the studies is the undenatured or denatured kind? I think there’s a difference in effect. Moreover, if we eat normal (denatured) collagen, won’t the body break it into amino-acids and use it the way it wants, not necessarily for our own collagen?
Thank you in advance for reply.

1 litre of yoghurt, 20 grams of gelatin and fruit (strawberries, blueberrie, bananas)

I prefer not to supplement if not necessary, like I eat brasil nuts for selenium. In some cases the bioavailibilty is much higher in food then from supplements

Excess glutamate is neuroexcitatory, and causes all sorts of aches, pain, fatigue, overstimulation, etc. Would love to find a supplement that builds collagen without the downsides.

Hi Michelle,

It is recommended to avoid collagen if you have histamine intolerance as the histidine can be converted into histamine. For better sleep, you may want to look into glycine supplementation and for healing the gut you may want to look into glutamine supplementation.

Does bone, calf tongue, or pigs feet broth contain collagen? I want a natural means of obtaining collagen besides the foods I already eat–(the same foods hat are mentioned in the posts). I haven’t tried Royal Jelly.

The marine collagen benefits are exceptional for skin and hair, however it has been challenging to find a source that is willing to provide a Certificate of Analysis, this is important because of the susceptibility of heavy metal contaminants.

It makes me gag. Even my dog won’t take it and he will eat anything! I’ve used vital proteins, which is one of the better ones on the market. I now take MSM with vitamin c, which I think stabilizes collagen levels.

Hi Konstantinos,

While collagen is broken down by stomach acid, it is not broken down completely into individual amino acids and the peptides (groups of amino acids) are absorbed intact in your gut, increasing collagen production.

Do we earmark the OH-pro for collagen remake?

Hi Rob,

Collagen does not contain histamine, however, it does contain histidine in small quantities. It also contains moderate amounts of glutamic acid, which can be converted into glutamate in the body. Bone broth would likely contain fewer amounts of both amino acids because it contains other compounds beside collagen, such as glycosaminoglycans and minerals.

Hi Marni,

It appears that collagen peptides make it through stomach acid and are small enough to be absorbed intact across the gut and accumulate in cartilage: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10498764. Moreover, supplementing with the individual amino acids found in collagen does not increase collagen production, indicating that only the intact peptides (group of amino acids) increase collagen production.

Hi Anna,

Yes, there is strong evidence that silicon supplementation increases collagen production. Whether it does this in people who are already sufficient in silicon is not known. It may be the case that it only increases collagen production in people who are already deficient in it. I have added this information.

It’s easy to see how it could offer considerable health benefits, especially as we don’t tend to get much of it in our diets in the modern day.

Is powdered collagen high in histamine and/ or glutamate? Moreso or less than fresh bone broth?

FYI fish collagen is predominantly Type 1 and 3 collagen, which is great for skin but less effective for joint health.

Yet there are lots of people claiming it’s helped them. Can you clarify this please? Thanks.

I noticed my skin looked much better after starting the Collagen. I think it helped my gut heal.
