In the Atacama desert I would order Diet Coke as a drink with meals. I sent back 2 cans as they tasted bitter. I then realized the taste was caused by my reaction to the coca leaves. They seemed to have affected my sense of taste.

Also, coca tea is used for kidneys traditionally in Peru, Bolivia and Colombia.
