Began Autoimmune Protocol 8yrs ago and stopped taking the 13 scrips that made me feel like crap. Felt amazingly better, joint pain wise and some other symptoms. Over the years, integrated a long list of additional supplements via trial and error. My labs have shown significant decreases in inflammation to the point it is virtually undetectable in some labs. *My (former) rheumatologist and neurologist say it is just a “fluke”. Cracks me up bc I have lab work going back 25yrs and my levels have never been this low.

But the insomnia continued. Added in intermittent fasting to work towards extended fasts. It has been transformative. I did 6 weeks of 96 hour fasts (1 cup of black coffee with a couple of pinches of pink salt + organic green tea otherwise. No additional supplements or oils, etc) I fasted Wednesday-Sunday. I didn’t go crazy refeeding but focused on nutrient dense foods and resuming my supplements. I am now sleeping! I frequently have multiple nights of 8+ hours of sleep… I have NEVER had that. And higher quality sleep. I drop maybe 5 lbs while fasting and gain back 2-3lbs. Have been monitoring via labs, blood pressure, etc – nothing out of kilter. Since I have historically single digit D levels, I will add in my D supplements while fasting.

I am back to my “regular” AIP eating 20:4 but doing the extended fasts every other week. My primary goal is sleep, losing a few extra pounds doesn’t hurt. If the sleep continues to remain stable, and I see no other “hiccups”, I plan on continuing it indefinitely.

All of that being said… my concern is during “flu season”. I haven’t had the flu (or a flu shot) in 19 years. Some articles say autophagy improves immunity but I have seen some others that state it may weaken immunity. I up my C, D, zinc and probiotics during winter months…. thoughts of those interfering with autophagy?

Great article – excellent resource! However, all of the articles I have read, including scientific extracts, state that the EGCG in green tea stimulates autophagy, rather than decreasing it. I’m wondering if the authors of the linked article may have mis-stated their conclusion.
