I will immediately stop and switch to regular water to see if there are any improvements.

Interesting point. As we clearly explain in the article, the pH of blood and other bodily fluids is tightly regulated by the lungs and kidneys in healthy people and can’t be modified with alkaline water (or food). However, keep in mind that the pH of most alkaline waters is very similar to that of baking soda (around 9), so their effect on acid reflux is not very surprising.
The role of alkaline water in exercise recovery also seems due to its alkaline pH, which would neutralize the excess of lactate. I don’t have an obvious real-life comparison like taking baking soda for acid reflux in this case, but the results were positive in several clinical trials in which I couldn’t find any obvious methodological flaws.
Concerning the rest of benefits, remember that most of them have been debunked, are based on insufficient evidence, or, in the case of ionized alkaline water, are due to its antioxidant activity rather than to its alkaline pH.

Even as a former biochemistry major I was not sure what to make of these claims about acid and base diets.

But what makes the topic of alkaline water especially interesting to me is that our municipal water, which is processed but originates from a glacier-fed stream, naturally ranges between 7.5 and 8..0 pH. Of course it is also pretty hard water with naturally high amounts of calcium, magnesium, and other dissolved minerals. This is the source of endless debate amongst my peers as to whether this is healthy, or whether we should be filtering, purifying, neutralizing, etc.

My main observation has been that I find our tap water tastes great, and I’m so happy to come home to it whenever I travel. And I can’t see the harm of getting extra calcium and magnesium from drinking water. (OTOH, it’s not very good for gardening–most plants seem to do better with more acid, and anything you do to the soil will soon be neutralized by the water!). And I do drink a lot of tap water, though I have wondered about the health of such alkaline water!

But now that you enumerate some of the health benefits of alkaline water, it does seem to me that I may actually be healthier in some respects than my friends who prefer bottled, filtered, purified, etc water. At least I can suppose that it hasn’t been hurting me.

1. micro clustering of water molecules (more permeable within the body than non-ionized water);
2. h2 gas infused in water carry the antioxidant properties they once gave credit (erroneously) to alkaline water

I do occasionally take water with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice just to make sure my stomach is sufficiently acidic. I can’t comprehend why I would want my stomach less acidic than nature provided.
I let my body sort out how it wants to run + or – on the scale.
I know part of the reason for acid in my stomach, to kill some bad stuff I may ingest.
My GI tract is happy, I’m happy and healthy. Things may change as I get older but I’ve already reached 80. I was raised in a dirty farm environment and drank from a “surface water” well, maybe that is why everything works now.
Why mess with with voodoo suppositions?
